Upset eMba residents to confront Council
Ward 22 residents are not happy with Govan Mbeki Municipality and are intending to forward their petition to the authorities.
eMBALENHLE – The residents of Ward 22 said the Govan Mbeki Municipality is pocket picking them by charging them for facilities they do not have.
The upset residents were speaking at a community meeting held on Saturday, 23 May.
The aim of the meeting was to discuss various issues which affect residents negatively, such as electricity problems, sewerage and toilets, bad roads, waste collection and demarcations.
Mr Thulani Mabena, a resident, said that municipality charge them for sewer services, however the toilets are not working in their area.
He said for the past three years the municipality have appointed three different contractors to fix the problem, but no progress was made.
“We were told that R33-million was allocated to fix the problem, but here we are three years later, having the same problem.
“It is high time that we as residents stand up and defend our rights from being violated.”
Residents also raised their concerns about the power cuts that are taking place in the area.
The electricity of most of the residents who buy electricity from vendors, was cut off.
“We went to enquire and were told it’s because the vendors do not appear in the system.
“This was the first time we were told to buy electricity direct from the municipality.
“We know the municipality owes Eskom, but they must not use corrupt ways in trying to raise the money to pay their debts,” said a resident.
The residents wrote their petition, signed it and nominated a committee that will hand it over to Mr Robert Mashiane, regional manager.
