Pupils use bricks to sit on in classrooms

We would like to have decent classrooms like those in townships.

eMBALENHLE – Pupils from Roodebank Combined School are tired of using bricks as chairs in their classrooms.

The school which is situated in a farm near eMbalenhle, accommodates grade 1 to 9 pupils from nearby farms and eMbalenhle.

There are also not enough classrooms so two different grades share one classroom.

“We would like to have decent classrooms like pupils who learn in townships,” said one pupil.

He further mentioned that at times, he suffers from back pains because of using bricks with nothing to balance his back.

The school is still waiting for the textbooks for grade 8 and 9.

Echo and Ridge Times contacted the Mpumalanga Department of Education on 17 April and the response was that the school did not order books for grade 8 and 9, but a process to assist the school have already started.

Pupils said the classrooms are cold because there are windows broken and some of the toilets do not have doors.

The bus that transports pupils from eMbalenhle to the school, is alleged to be overloaded and pupils have been complaining about it to their parents and the principal.

Business people in the municipal area last year promised to build two classrooms and an admission office.

Only the foundations are done and the rest of the project was left unfinished.

No comment was received by the Department of Education regarding school furniture and the building of extra classrooms by the time of going to press.
