The Lekwa Municipality is losing large amounts of money through illegal connections.
An alarming number of residents in Sakhile and Standerton continue to illegally connect electricity.
The term “bridging” is commonly associated with illegal electrical connections.
Most residents have resorted to this form of electrical connections to spend less on their electricity bill or nothing at all.
They tamper with the meter boxes that supply electricity to the households.
Bridging can injure and worst case scenario also cause death.
In most cases the earth leakage unit, which serves as protection against any accidental contact, is bypassed.

Mr Herbert Shai, the newly appointed HOD of Technical Services, acknowledged that the municipality is losing money through bridging and illegal connections.
He said this during a community meeting in Sakhile on 7 July.
The municipality also mentioned that they will be installing smart meters, that users can not tamper with, in every area in Lekwa.
