Water problems persist in Bethal

Still no light at the end of the tunnel.

Council says the reason for the water problems in Bethal is that Rand Water had increased the water pressure in order to fill the reservoirs.

“The infrastructure could not contain the pressure which then caused four pipes to burst,” said Mr Bheki Kubheka, Govan Mbeki Municipal spokesman, in an email sent at 12.11am this morning.

“Govan Mbeki Municipality would like to apologise to the community of Bethal and eMzinoni for the water interruption that has been experienced since Saturday, 18 July which affected the whole of eMzinoni.”

He said a main pipe burst between the municipal main reservoir and the Extension 4 municipal reservoir that is supplying water to Bethal and it was due to the same high pressure that could not be contained by the municipal infrastructure.

A team was dispatched to the site yesterday morning and the matter was being attended to with the hope that it would be sorted out by today.

“Meantime, the municipality will supply water through water tankers.”

* Bethal residents say this is not true.

“I have not seen even one water tanker.

“The water pressure this morning is very low in most of Bethal and Kleynhans Street still has no water.”

When asked for a comment, Mr Kubheka said a water tanker was definitely dispatched to Bethal yesterday, and another one from eMbalenhle was sent last night.

He also said municipal employees have been doing repairs since yesterday morning.
