Evander hitchhiker strangled to death
The deceased has not yet been identified.
EVANDER – A man hitchhiking from Evander to Leslie was killed.
Two men were hitchhiking from Evander when an unknown woman who was standing with them, allegedly pretended to be picking up money from the ground.
While their focus was on her, a Silver Nissan Sentra stopped and three men pretending to be police officers got out.
They asked to search the two men and told them they had to go with them to the Leandra Police Station.
The men were surprised when the car passed the Leandra Police Station and one asked the driver were they were taking them to.
The men were allegedly forced to drink something which was meant to drug them.
The hitchhikers did not know each other, they only met at the hiking spot.
The suspects robbed them of their cash and cell phones and abandoned them in Glenroy, Heidelberg.
One of the hitchhikers was strangled to death and the other hitchhiker managed to crawl to a nearby farm where he was offered help.
Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate of Heidelberg Police Station confirmed that an unknown man aged between 40 and 50 years old was strangled to death and his body was dumped on Friday, 17 July between 13pm and 14.30pm.
He said it was alleged that the deceased was with another man and they were hiking from Evander to Leandra when they were held up by people impersonating police officers using a Silver Nissan Sentra.
The deceased who has not yet been identified and another man were forced into a car and they were robbed of their belongings.
The deceased was wearing a blue Sasol work jacket written, a black belt, black trousers, a white T-shirt, a watch and brown socks.
The police said he is coffee colour in complexion, of medium build and a black ZCC cap was lying next to him.
