Owner unaware of millions in damage
The belts continued burning weeks after the firefighters extinguished the fire
Conveyer belts worth a substantial amount of money were destroyed in a fire that broke out at Amakosi scrapyard on 14 June.
According to Mr David Sibanyoni, owner of the scrapyard, he still cannot get hold of the owner of the conveyor belts.
He said the belts did not belong to him and the owner kept them at the scrapyard and only collected them when needed.
“I tried to get hold of him several times to inform him about the incident, but still cannot reach him,” Mr Sibanyoni said.
Mr Sibanyoni did not know whether the conveyor belts were insured or not.
The belts continued burning weeks after the firefighters extinguished the fire.
The smoke from the belts was clearly visible and people could see it from town.
Mr Sibanyoni and his employees burnt the grass in and around the scrapyard after the conveyor belts caught fire.
“This is to ensure that if someone starts a fire and leaves it unattended, the grass will not catch fire,” he also said. They monitored the fire and extinguished it after burning the grass.
