Millions for Maths and Science

To achieve this objective, the department allocated R20 million to the MST academy.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education has set aside R59 million to promote maths, science and technology (MST) in this financial year.

This comes after the Department of Basic Education retracted and corrected their statement falsely suggesting that half of the schools in Mpumalanga offer mathematics.

The provincial maths and science academy is one of the radical measures the department has taken to increase enrolment and performance in mathematics and physical science in Grades 10 to 12 to keep up with the national strategy for mathematics, science and technology.

To achieve this objective, the department allocated R20 million to the MST academy. A further R39 million has been allocated for the procurement and installation of new machinery and equipment consistent with technical subjects that are offered in technical schools, train and up-skill teachers in technical schools on identified areas in technical subjects to improve teaching and learning.
