Traditional leaders protest over high price of graves
Council will respond in 7 days.
eMZINONI – The House of Traditional Leaders led residents in a peaceful protest yestersay to oppose the high increase in graves tariffs in the area.
Traditional Leaders said the price of graves went up twice in a week.
Mr Simon Skosana, spokesman, said this is unfair and negatively affects the poor.
He said a grave was R325 to R1 353 during the week and on Saturday, and on Sunday R1 800.
These rates were effective from 1 July.
“The Govan Mbeki Municipality is being unfair to the residents.
“This is not the only problem, but the council is underming and disrespecting us.
“Hearing that we will march, they went to the community and told them they will reduce the rates.
“What do they take us for?”
Mr King Sihlali, regional manager, received the memorandam on behalf of Ms Lindi Masina, executive mayor, who did not attend because of health problems.
He apologised on her behalf.
He promised that Council will respond to the memorandum in the next seven days.
