Multiple cars involved in accident, two die
Some of the passengers were still trapped in two vehicles.
Multiple cars were involved in an accident between Standerton and Secunda on the R546 Road this morning.
According to Mr Jabulani Mkhwanazi, from the Department of Fire and Rescue, these vehicles were travelling in different directions.
An undisclosed number of people who were travelling in these vehicles were taken to the Standerton Hospital for medical treatment.
Some of the passengers were still trapped in two of the vehicles.
According to Mr Mkhwanazi, he knows of two people who died in the accident, but he cannot disclose whether there were more people who died because some patients were transported to the Standerton Hospital.
He could also not elaborate on the extent of their injuries.
The police, The Department of Fire and Rescue and Jeria Ambulance Services are still on the scene.
Previous accident on this road
An accident also occurred on this road on 25 May when a car and truck were involved.
Mr Hennie Cronje, a farm manager, said, accidents happen frequently on the R546 Road.
“I think it is because there are no lines on the road that was recently upgraded.”
Mr Cronje also said there is a possibility that motorists can not tell whether they are driving on the correct side of the road or not.
“Motorists also overtake when they are not supposed to and that also causes accidents.”
According to Mr Sipho Mkwanazi, Lekwa Municipality spokesman, the R546 is a provincial road.
The Mpumalanga Department of Roads and Transport could not be reached for a comment.

UPDATE
The Department of Fire Rescue has confirmed that three people died in the accident that occurred between Standerton and Secunda earlier today.
According to Mr Jabulani Mkhwanazi, two of these people died on the scene and one died in hospital.
He said the two that died on the scene were trapped in two vehicles.
The fire fighters used the jaws of life to get them out of the vehicles.
“Three people sustained injuries but their injuries were not severe,” he said.
Mr Mkhwanazi said six more people had minor injuries.
