We will protest on Friday and make Tutuka come to a standstill
Members of the local taxi association began blocking the exits from Sakhile at about 5am on Tuesday morning.
Commuters on their way to work at Eskom’s Tutuka Power Station saw the unfolding of a scenario rife with tension.
Branded vehicles belonging to Eskom contractors and the Eskom personnel buses were included in this mass action.
The association directed the impounded vehicles to the Rooikoppen Taxi Rank and both the Sakhile Police and the Standerton Police, while overseeing the operation, kept a close eye on proceedings.
The reason for the conflict is twofold with the association demanding that only transportation be done through vehicles of the association and company-owned vehicles be decommissioned and only transport from the association is used.
According to Mr Ryno Lacock, manager at Tutuka, about 50 employees were affected, but the total of contractors and personnel working can be close to 2 000, who have to commute to the power station and mine daily.
“I am quite disappointed with renegade members of the taxi association who held people hostage and prevented them from coming to work.”
According to Mr Mandla Mbonani, chairman of the taxi association, rumours had it the meeting scheduled for Wednesday was postponed, which made members furious.
“We will protest on Friday and make Tutuka come to a standstill,” Mr Mbonani said.
