Council on a mission to deal with sewer problems
The Govan Mbeki Municipality urged residents to partner in dealing with sewerage problems.
HIGHVELD – The Govan Mbeki Municipality has heeded to a call from residents to intensify the refurbishment of all sewer infrastructures through its budget and municipal infrastructure grant.
The municipality is also benchmarking with other stakeholders to form a partnership with the aim of ensuring that the lives of the people are being restored.
Mr Bheki Kubheka, acting head of communication and marketing, said much work is progressing in all three regions in the municipal area.
He urged residents to help the municipality to prevent blockages by doing the following:
Avoid putting fat, oil or grease and food leftovers down the kitchen sink or drain because these solidify and build up in the sewer line.
Refraining from dumping any inappropriate objects such as bricks, rocks, car parts and carcasses into sewers.
Never flush solid materials or objects down your toilet, such as food, tampons, sanitary pads, cleaning rags, nappies and nappies wipes, because these prevent the free flow of sewage and may damage your plumbing system.
Make use of qualified plumbers and use good quality material when laying or fixing your drainage installations.
Know your drainage layout and refrain from planting trees next to pipes or building on top of sewer pipes.
Mr Kubheka said the cooperation of the residents can help reduce the constant sewer problems in the area.
