Fire at dumpsite spreads to farm
There has not been any improvement with regards to the conditions at the dumpsite.
A portion of a farm recently burnt when a fire, that started at the Standerton dumpsite, spread.
Workers at the landfill site believe the fire got worse due to people dumping empty cement bags, which are highly flammable.
The bags caught flame and the wind blew the burning bags all over.
Kasselman Security Services reported the fire to the Department of Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management and three of their trucks went to help.
According to the firefighters, AfriForum helped them in extinguishing the fire.
It took them a while to extinguish the veld fire, but after more than two hours they got it done.
The firefighters said the wind was making their job difficult as it was blowing quite strongly.
They also confirmed that no one died during the incident, no animals were killed in the blaze and no houses were burnt down.
About 30 hectares of land was burnt in the fire at a cost of R2 000 per hectare which gives a total of R60 000.
The Lekwa Municipality promised to rehabilitate the landfill site in February this year.
They said they will cover the existing site with grass and use the one behind it. This came after Kosmospark and Florapark residents raised concerns about the fires from the dumpsite.
The residents were not happy about the smoke and said they had to keep the windows closed all the time.
Laerskool Jeugkrag also wrote a letter, requesting the municipality to do something about the situation.
