eMzinoni police officers become victims of a scam

Police did not notice that it was a scam, because of fraudster’s knowledge of police documents and the names of some of the suspects.

eMZINONI – The police are looking for a scamster who pretended to be Adv Lt MD Magadlela, provincial commissioner of police, and promised police officers promotions.

It is alleged that he called eMzinoni police officers and asked them why they have not applied for senior positions.

However, the police quickly realized it was a scam.

He called the station again and claimed that he was Capt Rametsi and requested information of suspects in the cells and the contact numbers of their next of kin.

Const Cynthia Mutsweni, police spokesman, said this time the police did not notice that it was a scam, because of his knowledge of police documents and the names of some of the suspects.

She said he was given some information of the suspects.

Const Mtsweni said the scamster called the families of the suspects and pretended that he was a lawyer.

“He told the families their relatives were arrested unlawfully and he was willing to help them be released from prison.

“One of the families deposited R1 000 into this man’s account.”

The family was shocked during the court appearance of their relative when the magistrate gave a verdict that their relatives face Risorgimento.

They enquired at the court administration and it was realised that they were scammed.

Upon investigation the police realised the scamster had been using the same telephone number and was pretending to be a labour agent.

Const Mtsweni said the Crime Intelligent Unit is investigating and urged people to be careful of the following number: 073 670 1010.
