It is alleged that Mr Madonsela and a friend tried to rob a local taxi driver the day before.
A group of men searched for them the next day and found them in Extension 17.
The two men were transported to the taxi rank at eMba Mall where they were assaulted.
Mr Madonsela’s friend sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Evander Hospital.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the mob included taxi drivers.
Mr Fanyana Sibanyoni, chairman of the Vukanini Taxi Association, could not comment.
Capt Magonseni Nkosi, police spokesman, said the arrests were a breakthrough for the police because their aim is to deal with mob justice in the area.
The six men were released on free bail and will reappear in court on Thursday, 26 November.
