Suspected robber under police protection in hospital

Police condemn mob justice.

eMBALENHLE – A 21-year-old man is under police protection at the Evander Hospital after he was assaulted by community members in Extension 9.

It is alleged that he and a friend entered an Ethiopian’s shop, fired a shot and wounded the shop owner.

They fled the scene on foot.

The landlord gave chase and asked for the community’s help.

They responded, chased the two men and apprehended one.

The second man managed to escape.

The shop owner and the suspect were admitted to the Evander Hospital, but the shop owner was later transferred to another hospital.

Capt Magonseni Nkosi, police spokesman, said the other suspect was arrested the next day.

He said the motive for the attack is unknown, but it is suspected to have been robbery.

“I urged the community to cooperate with the police to fight crime, but to not take the law into their own hands.

“Mob justice is a crime,” he said.
