Angry residents protest over smart meters

Angy residents of Kosmospark are protesting against the installation of smart meters.

The protest began at 6pm, after technicians were prohibited to install the meters.

The technicians then discontinued the supply of all the electricity to their homes which caused an uproar.

The protesters allegedly began throwing stones at vehicles passing by.

They also broke the power supply boxes’ locks to gain access to the cables inside to turn the power back on.

According to one of the protesters, the municipal manager, Mr Linda Tshabalala, was there and apparently told them that smart meters would be installed whether they liked it or not.

Because they tampered with the power supply boxes, some of the other houses’ electricity were also interrupted.

The residents of these houses are afraid of what the protesters might do next.

These residents were not part of the protest and complained about the protesters disrupting the peace.

Mr. Basjan Lombard, a resident, said that the protesters are causing dogs to go berserk.

When the police showed up most of the protesters left.

Members of the AfriForum Neighbourhoodwatch were also on the scene.

UPDATE: 3 December 8:52am

The municipal manager, Mr Linda Tshabalala, said on 3 December that the court order prohibiting residents to interfere with the installation of smart meters is clear.

Mr Tshabalala said three municipal employees sustained injuries during the protest and one was admitted to hospital.
