Eskom to pull the plug on Lekwa Municipality

Eskom Holdings SOC Limited hereby notifies all parties who are likely to be materially and adversely affected by the contemplated discontinuation of electricity supply to Lekwa Municipality on 11 April 2016 and continuing indefinitely, following Lekwa Municipality’s failure to settle on due dates an amount of R206 497 287.30 (two hundred and six million, four hundred and ninety-seven thousand and two hundred and eighty-seven rand and thirty cents) for the supply of electricity, part of which has been outstanding and in escalation since July 2011 (“the electricity debt”).

Eskom is obliged to supply electricity on a financially sustainable basis.

The failure of Lekwa Municipality to pay its electricity account timeously has jeopardised the financial sustain ability of supplying electricity to the below-mentioned town/municipal area.

Eskom hereby invites all parties to submit written comments on or before the date specified below indicating why Eskom should or should not proceed with the planned disconnection.

The submissions/comments or requests for further information should be submitted for the attention of the Senior Manager: Customer Services, to fax: 086 568 261 0 or e-mail: CSMpumalanga@Eskom.co.za or via post to PO Box 579, Nelspruit 1200 or hand delivery to 28 Ferreira Street, Nelspruit.

The closing date for submissions will be end of business on 4 March 2016.

Please take note that comments received after the closing date will not be considered.

According to Eskom the electricity cuts will affect residents at the following times:

Monday – Friday: 6am – 10am and from 5pm – 9pm

Saturday – Sunday: 7am – 10am and from 5pm – 8pm.

The Standerton Advertiser tried to get comment from the municipality, but the municipal manager, Mr Linda Tshabalala, was in a meeting in Nelspruit and his cell phone was rerouted to another number.
