Gang fight for peace

The conflict from local pupils gangs has been resolved.

eMBALENHLE – Months after bloodshed connected to gang violence, school gangs have united to call for peace.

The rivalry gangs Weshe, Wrong Turns, Spartans, and others from iKusasalethu Comprehensive School and Kiriyatswane Secondary School agreed to put their weapons down and fight for peace.

Gang violence was escalating in the area.

It is unclear what the reasons for the violence were, but some pupils alleged that it began when a man from Extension 26 was stabbed and killed by a man from the Mandela Section.

The pupils said they were influenced to perpetuate violence by people from out of school .

Mr Phindile Sibande, a teacher, took the initiative to mediate between the two rival groups in his school.

The conflict was between groups from Extensions 11 and 26 and the Mandela Section.

He said the violence was getting out of hand and many innocent people were affected.

“It was affecting the pupils’ performance and the reputation of the school.

“I took a risk to call them in to find out what the problem was.

“All parties were willing to sit round the table to resolve the matter from day one of the negotiation.

“Our engagements were successful and we began to involve gangs from Kiriyatswane Secondary School who were also willing to make peace.”

Mr Sibande then called all parties involved to the sportsfield in Extension 9 where he motivated them to make peace and to focus on their studies on 26 January.

The groups met at Kiriyatswane Secondary School for a media briefing.

The former rivalry gangs took selfies together and jokes and laughter were the order of the day.
