Govan Mbeki Municipality will implement stricter control on businesses that do not maintain and keep their service yards clean.
Mr Bheki Kubheka, senior manager of the office of the municipal manager and acting head of Communications and Marketing, said it is unacceptable that refuse is dumped in a service yard without placing it in an approved container and or receptacle.
“The municipality renders a waste collection service three times a week to all businesses.
“The waste is piling up daily, because businesses and the public dump refuse in places that are not declared as waste disposal sites.”
The municipality has issued notices to businesses to comply with the Waste Management By-Laws.
* Waste must be kept neat and stored in black rubbish bags.
* Refuse must be placed in an approved container or receptacle.
* Refuse must only to be put out on the day of removal by the municipality on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
“Contravening any of the above will lead to prosecution, a fine or both,” said Mr Kubheka.
“The municipality will also force business owners to supply their own bins to avoid littering as this has added an unnecessary burden on the municipal waste personnel, meaning more personnel must be stationed in those areas to monitor the illegal dumping.
“If the illegal dumping continues, the municipality will have no choice but to add extra charges to businesses to cover the costs of running the expense of the yellow fleet,” said Mr Kubheka.
The municipality renders a waste collection service to waste generators who need to contain and take responsibility for their own generated waste.
“If the municipality is unable to collect waste, the community and businesses must still act responsibly by keeping their waste on their premises until it can be collected.
“Dumping waste illegally in any open public space, will worsen the problem as it will have an impact on the health of the community and environment they indirectly live in.”
