Bethal hosts Mpumalanga launch of Milestones of Freedom campaign

The Nomoya Masilela Cultural Precinct in Bethal provided a significant setting for the Mpumalanga launch of the Milestones of Freedom Campaign, bringing together government leaders, learners, community members and various stakeholders to reflect on South Africa’s journey from apartheid to democracy.

The launch was attended by Kenny Morolong (Deputy Minister in The Presidency), Thulasizwe Thomo (Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport), Nhlakanipho Zuma ( Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality), Fikile Magagamela |(Speaker of Council), and Nomkhosi Zulu (Gert Sibande District Municipality MMC for Community and Social Services).

The programme included a guided tour of the Nomoya Masilela Museum with learners from AD Nkosi MST Academy in eMzinoni, a history-sharing session, wreath-laying at the Nokuthula Simelane and Gert Sibande statues, an intergenerational dialogue, and cultural and musical performances.

Deputy Minister Morolong emphasised the importance of preserving South Africa’s liberation history and ensuring that younger generations understand the sacrifices that made democracy possible.

MEC Thomo highlighted Bethal’s important contribution to Mpumalanga’s liberation history and the broader struggle for freedom.

The Milestones of Freedom Campaign commemorates key milestones in South Africa’s democratic journey while promoting civic engagement, public participation and integrated government service delivery.

Residents, learners, visitors, and tourists are encouraged to visit the Nomoya Masilela Museum to learn more about the rich liberation history of Bethal and the surrounding communities.
