Follow up: Traffic officers denied bail

Fake learner’s licenses could be bought for approximately R3 500.

SECUNDA – Altogether 13 traffic officers from Secunda and Ekurhuleni were denied bail by a district court in Benoni on Wednesday,  19 October.

The officers were arrested on Tuesday by the Road Traffic Corporation’s Ant-corruption Unit and the Mpumalanga Hawks on Tuesday, following a year-long investigation into alleged corruption at the two licensing departments.

According to local residents who were approached by traffic officers, fraudulent driver’s licenses were sold for anything from R4000 to R15 000.

Fake learner’s licenses could be bought for approximately R3 500.

The suspects will appear in the Benoni Rregional Court again on Tuesday, 25 October.
