Sewage trouble continues

"They come here, they look and go away without doing anything and that's all they do."

Residents living in the informal settlement of Emadamini, Wesselton are having to endure the constant stench of sewage that has been flowing past their homes since December.

The sewage originates from blocked and overflowing sewerage pipes and flows down furrows that residents have dug in a desperate effort to guide the sewage away from their homes.

According to one of the residents, she has reported the problem to the municipality on several occasions since last year as well as to the Ward 2 councillor, but no effort has been made to rectify the problem.

“They come here, they look and go away without doing anything and that’s all they do. This is not a healthy situation, especially for our children. They are constantly sick, but nobody seems to care.” she said.

A toilet in the resident’s yard had to be demolished and closed off, because of the sewage constantly backwashing and flooding the toilet bowl.
