Five suspects escape from Secunda holding cells

Police are still on the lookout for three of the five suspects.

Five trial awaiting suspects escaped from the Secunda Police Station holding cells yesterday at about 10am.

The suspects who are reported to have jumped the fence, were seen running by a member of the community at the station perimeter.

The circumstances surrounding their escape remain a subject of investigation. Police have in the mean time launched a manhunt for the escapees.

They are:

  • Karabo Mkhwanazi (29) who was arrested for shoplifting;
  • Buti Absalom Nxumalo (26) who was arrested for shoplifting;
  • Fanyana Vincent Jiyane (30) who was arrested for rape and common robbery;
  • Siyanda Dlamini (34) who was arrested for shoplifting
  • and Dumisani Simon Hlatshwayo (31) who was also arrested for shoplifting. He was rearrested shortly after he escaped.

The Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, has issued an instruction to the Secunda Police that they must make sure that the escapees are captured before they cause more harm to the community.

If the suspects are seen, the community is warned not to confront them but to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Dumisani Mbokane at 082556 5630, or the crime stop number at 08600 10111 or the nearest police station for information.
