Sasol employees evacuated to assembly rooms after loud noise

Rumours of a gas leak at Sasol yesterday morning, 24 January were doing the rounds on social media, but Mr Alex Anderson, Head of Group Media Relations at Sasol, said in a press release it was confirmed there was no gas release.
He said: “All areas have been declared safe and the emergency has been called off.”
They were preparing to safely commission the affected plants late yesterday morning and he said Sasol remains committed to the safety of its employees, service providers and the community.
The Ridge Times received an influx of reports about evacuation of Sasol employees to assembly rooms this morning, 24 January.
Some employees reported seeing thick large smoke coming out of the Sasol flairs.
People also reported on social media that a loud noise could be heard which sounded like an explosion.
Sasol issued the following statement regarding the current situation.
“At approximately 8.30am the Sasol East Plant experienced an electricity power failure.
“Engineers are currently working to resolve the issue. An investigation is underway to determine the root cause.
“Current focus is to ensure that all plants decommissioned safely, whereafter the normal restart sequence will follow.
“No emergency related injuries have been reported at this stage.
“Sasol remains committed to the safety of its employees, contractors and the community,” the statement issued by Sasol read.
