A radio drama festival is set to take place within the seven local municipalities in the Gert Sibande District where stories of social ills in society can be told and challenged by schools.
The National Lotteries Commission, Voice of the Community FM and Gert Sibande District School of Radio Drama recently hosted a training camp for teachers to help learners in creating a radio drama.

A radio drama festival is set to take place within the seven local municipalities in the Gert Sibande District and stakeholders saw the need to provide a platform where stories of social ills in society can be told and challenged.
“Some stories have been thoroughly told in more ways than one and others have not been addressed properly or even avoided as seen too sensitive and a taboo topic,” Mr Dakalo Kwinda, an acclaimed director and scriptwriter, said.
He also said learners will be agents of social change, addressing the issues and raising awareness.
“We grew up on folktales that were not only a form of entertainment, but also educational.
“Stories can be told by anyone and everyone, but this opportunity gives learners a chance to tell stories that challenge the way we think,” Mr Malvin Shabangu, programme manager at VOC FM, said.
Learners will present a 25 minute maximum drama, using only their voices and sound effects.
A total of 10 schools have been chosen and a member of the production team at the station will act as facilitator for each school.
Airing of the dramas will begin in May and communities within the district will be given a chance to listen and also voice their opinions.
Winners will get prize money, while participating schools will get an incentive of R5 000 each.
