Extension 15 residents have raised their concerns over the water reservoir in the area.
They said it poses a danger to their children because it is not barricaded and children often play there.
The reservoir was disconnected from supplying water to the area after residents complained that the water was contaminated with algae and worms.
However its gates were left opened and the sail that was covering the dam, has fallen inside it.
Children see this as an adventurous place to play in.
A concerned parent said: “The municipality was supposed to lock the gate and ensure that no one enters it.
“Our children play there every day and it’s dangerous. The municipality knows that in the past murderers had dumped bodies there, but they still leave the place open. We have reported this to the councillor several times, but nothing has been done yet. They want someone to die there first before they take action.”
Residents also complained that instead of the municipality fixing and cleaning the water reservoir, they decided to disconnect it.
They said since the reservoir had stopped working, they have been struggling with water, especially during peak hours, because they are supplied via a bypass.
Residents said they have to get up as early as 4am to get water.
“This council is not treating us like human beings, water is a basic need and no one can survive without it.
“We are calling on the municipality to come up with permanent solutions and to lock the gates to the reservoir for the safety of the community,” said a resident.
Govan Mbeki Municipality did not respond to the newspaper’s queries.
