Makhosonke Nkosi was sentenced on 21 February in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court to 18 months’ imprisonment for shoplifting.
He stole clothes from Ackermans in Bethal and fled on foot.
A shop assistant chased after him and with the help of a community member, managed to apprehend him.
They took him back to the store where they handed him over to the police.
Const Victor Nkadimeng, investigating officer, discovered that Nkosi had previous convictions for theft and assault.
Const Thomas Mogadime, police spokesman, said shoplifting is a serious problem in the area and that this sentence will serve as a lesson to others.
“The sentence will serve as a clear message to anyone who might think of committing shoplifting or theft, that crime does not pay, no matter how big or small.”
