Although the Govan Mbeki Municipality has reduced the Eskom debt, they still owe the power utility more than R500 million.
This amount includes the debt, as well as the arrears on the current account.
If this is not enough, their debt to Rand Water has escalated to more than R105 million.
The plan they have proposed to Rand Water on 9 February for repaying their debt, was rejected.
Their projected repayment plan to Rand Water indicated that they would pay their arrears by the end of December, providing they keep up with the repayment plan.
Regarding the Eskom debt, the municipality only paid the power utility three times in 2017, namely R54 million in March, R80 million in June and R62 million in December.
The balance on the debt amounts to more than R150 million.
They have not paid anything towards their repayment plan to Eskom thus far this year.
In the meantime, refuse removal could not take place, because the municipality did not have money for diesel, according to reliable sources.
