Local businesses close down government departments in Standerton

"If you have a problem with the municipality, deal with the municipality, not innocent people," was one of the comments.

Local businesses, including the Lekwa Black Business Forum, Lekwa Group of Companies, Lekwa Economic Development and Lekwa Youth Economic Development Forum, shut down government departments on 1 March.

The businesses ordered the employees to stop working and evacuate the buildings.

They first began at the Lekwa municipal offices in Mbonani Mayisela Street before moving on to the traffic department and Ext 8, where activities of installing electricity were halted, before moving to the Sakhile municipal building, where they did the same.

“The Lekwa Municipality awards tenders to outside businesses and ignores the locals,” Mr Mdu Sibanyoni said.

“We will shut down most, if not all operations, until Tuesday.”

Some people complained at the traffic department, questioning their part in awarding of tenders.

“If you have a problem with the municipality, deal with the municipality, not innocent people,” was one of the comments.
