Two apprehended with suspected stolen goods outside Trichardt

The suspects were unable to explain where they found the goods and the police arrested them for possession of suspected stolen goods

It is suspected that the alleged stolen goods were kept hidden under these tarps in a field outside Trichardt.

TRICHARDT – Two men were arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods on the outskirts of Trichardt on Wednesday, 28 February.

A response member of Secunda 911 Assist spotted men loading televisions into a bakkie next to a field near the Syfertontein Mine turn off on the N17 highway.

He thought it looked suspicious and alerted StratconRisk and the police. The suspects scattered when they were confronted, but two were eventually apprehended.

Two other suspects ran into a field and disappeared. Mr Kosie van der Merwe, a local farmer and pilot, offered to search for the suspects by plane.

“I think this is actually a great way to help the police. We could unfortunately not spot the suspects. I think the problem was getting the plane airborne as soon as possible.”

The response team searched the area where the men were caught and discovered tarps where the stolen goods were stashed.

“It is a hiding spot where we believe stolen items were being stored to ‘cool off’,” said Mr Jacques Alberts of StratconRisk.

This bakkie was used to transport the suspected stolen goods.

He suggested that residents mark their valuable items with a serial number or personal details. This will make it easier to return stolen items to the correct owners.

These are some of the goods that were found in the suspects’ possession.

According to Capt Noyise Ngqangashe, Trichardt Police Station’s commander, the suspects hail from Mozambique.

“They drove a white Toyota Condor with a JVC plasma televison, three JVC speakers and a JVC amp inside. The suspects were unable to explain where they had found the goods and the police arrested them for possession of suspected stolen goods.” Both suspects appeared in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on 1 March.
