eMZINONI – A 23-year-old mother was found guilty of child abandonment after she left her two-week-old baby on a clinic sister’s doorstep.
She was sentenced in the Bethal Regional Court to two years’ imprisonment suspended for five years.
The sister found the baby on her porch in 2016 and contacted the police.
The child is now in foster care.
Capt Lizzie Koekemoer, commander of the Family Violence, Sexual Offence and Child Protection Unit, urged mothers who cannot take care of their children, to visit social workers who can help them to give the child up for adoption.
