SPCA volunteer opens case of attempted murder against man at sales yard
Chanae was on the bonnet like a bug.

HIGHVELD – Ms Chanae Elliott (19) who has been working as a full time volunteer at the Highveld Ridge SPCA in Evander, is viewed as a heroin by her co-workers.
Ms Elliott was allegedly nearly run over by a man at the sales yard in Standerton on Friday, 16 March.
The Highveld Ridge SPCA visits the sales yard in Standerton every Friday to ensure things are in order there and Ms Elliott was trying to talk to a man who was uploading mixed species onto his trailer.
“According to the South African National Code, animals of different species are not allowed to be on the same trailer except if there are divisions,” said Ms Jenneth Geel, senior inspector of the Highveld Ridge SPCA.
“We are usually trying to educate and inform the people at the sales yard.
“Chanae called me on Friday and asked for assistance in trying to talk to this man who was uploading animals of different species onto the same trailer.
“I went there and we tried to talk to him and his wife, but they did not want to listen.
“They began swearing at us.
“The next moment he got into his vehicle and I saw him aiming straight at Chanae, turning his steering wheel to aim in her direction and he then stepped onto the petrol and drove forward.
“Chanae was on the bonnet like a bug, she pushed herself off and landed next to the vehicle and the man just sped off.
“The man’s wife still screamed at Chanae not to damage their car.”
Ms Elliott opened a case of attempted murder against the man at Standerton Police and they also informed the national SPCA council.
The man apparently resides in Randfontein and the police are still investigating the case.
Ms Geel said she has been visiting this sales yard since 1983 and since things at the yard has improved a little bit, they are now focussing on educating the drivers and people loading the animals onto the trailers.
Ms Elliott was shocked after the incident and was taken to hospital.
Her shoulder was dislocated and she now has to wear a sling.
“Luckily I fell next to the vehicle when I pushed myself off the bonnet and not in front of it, because then he probably would have driven over me,” said Ms Elliott.
Ms Geel said Ms Elliott does not stand back when it comes to animal cruelty and she did not deserve what the man did to her.
“She is a heroin and we appreciate her dedicated service at the Highveld Ridge SPCA,” said Ms Geel.
She thanked the national SPCA for their help in tracking the offenders and the Standerton Police for their help.
