[UPDATE 06:30] The R50 road between the N17 offramp and Leandra is open and safe for use.
[UPDATE 23:00] Security services on the scene said the protests are continuing from this morning.
A warning has been issued by the police and is being circulated on social media that motorists should avoid the R50 road between the N17 offramp and Leandra.
The R50 road from the off ramp at the N17 highway up to the bridge before entering the town centre of Leandra is completely closed off and strewn with rocks. Protestors are burning tyres in the road.
According to the security personnel the protests began on Sunday night, 22 April.
The situation quieted down in the morning but tempers again flared up as the sun was setting.
There is a large police presence in the area.
