BETHAL – Chris Hani Street in Bethal has been barricaded off since this morning, 29 April – apparently for a wedding celebration.
Residents have been complaining since this morning that the road in front of a private residence has been closed and private vehicles could not pass.
Ms Marietjie Fourie, DA Ward Covuncillor, visited the house where a large white tent has been erected – partially in the street. “ I was told the people are having a wedding and the celebrations would still last for another eight hours.
They told me that they received permission to close off the road from ANC Councillor, Mapiki Mtsweni.
Mr Mtsweni told the media that he did not give anyone permission to block off a road. “I am not home, but I am following this up immediately with our regional manager. “
Const Thomas Mogadime, spokesman for Bethal Police, said this is a matter for the Govan Mbeki Municipality. “People can only apply to the council for permission to close off the road.”
