eMZINONI – Law enforcers encouraged learners from Khethelo Secondary School to refrain from using drugs and to focus on their studies.
The Department of Correctional Services, in partnership with SAPS, visited the school in Extension 4 to raise awareness of drug and substance abuse.
The Department of Correctional Services was represented by the head of Community Corrections, Ms Priscilla Kubheka, Ms Patience Hlatshwayo, Mishack Hadebe and two ex-offenders, Messrs Jabulane Mndebele and Meyer Gersanda.
Const Cynthia Mtsweni represented the eMzinoni Police.
Ms Kubheka said: “The reason why we are here is to save you from yourself and your behaviour.
“Because there is little you can do, not knowing of the consequences and it could be detrimental to the rest of your life.
“It only takes a few minutes for you to end your life. Stay away from drugs and respect your elders.”
Mr Mndebele who also studied at Khethelo Secondary School, told the children how he got into crime and about the realities of life in prison.
“In prison, you share one shower and one toilet and they will give you a very small bed. We are approaching winter and in prison there are no heaters and they will only give you one blanket. I am sure you do not want to live your life like that. It is hard being in prison, so please take care of yourselves.”
