Friends mourn the death of Nono from eMbalenhle

Evander Hospital was accused of negligence during Mr Maseko’s memorial service.

eMBALENHLE – Friends and family gathered to remember Mr Alfred Maseko on Thursday, 17 May at the House of Praise Tabernacle.

Mr Maseko, also known as Nono, died on 13 May in the Evander Hospital after a long illness.

He was an activist and the founder of the African Community Dialogue (ACD) which he founded in 2015.

The ACD was aimed at empowering the community to be self reliant.

The main focus was to contribute towards the elimination of poverty and to reduce inequality.

Mr Maseko’s friends and the residents praised him for his positive contribution to the society.

The community awards that he hosted for the locals who were doing well, was the highlight of his life.

Mr Thokozane Mndawe, a friend, described him as a brave man who spoke his mind at all times.

“He had the courage to confront people regarding issues in the community. He was politically well informed.

“He was connected to people in high places, such as Vuyo Mkoena and Hhashi Elimhlophe.

“We will miss him very much.”

Mr Robert Mashiane, regional manager of Region 3, was a programme director and he also shared his memories while he was part of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

He said Mr Maseko was assertive though he was the youngest member of the party in the area.

“Mr Maseko respected all people and he was a strong believer in Africanism.

“Our views over regions and cultures often clashed, but he respected that.”

Friends of Mr Maseko also voiced their unhappiness with the way in which Mr Maseko was treated at Evander Hospital.

They said the hospital is in a bad state.

Mr Ntshalintshali said at one stage he found Mr Maseko could hardly breathe and indicated that the oxygen machine did not have oxygen.

He approached the nurse, but he was ignored.

“I went to the nurse for a second time. She came with me, but on the way she met a friend and they talked for about 15 minutes before she attended to Mr Maseko.

“This was not a pleasant experience and we intend to take the matter up with the management.”

Past Solly Mahlangu encouraged friends and family and reminded them of the greatness of God and His love.

The Hlophe family, Mr Maseko’s guardian family, was praised for adopting him and for taking care of him like their own.

Ms Maseko was buried on 19 May in Sheepmoor near Mkhondo.
