WATCH: Fire fighters are damping down the smouldering remains of the house in Wolwespruit Street, Secunda

SECUNDA – Although the flames have been extinguished, fire fighters are damping down the smouldering remains of the house in Wolwespruit Street, Secunda at 5.30pm today.

Most of the house has been destroyed.

Mr Alan Vermaak (20) told the newspaper he was asleep in the house when the fire errupted.

“I just saw flames and smoke when I woke up,” said the visibly shocked young man.

“I grabbed the house keys and my phone, unlocked the front door and ran out to look for help.”

Mr John Bezuidenhout who lives across the street from 37 Wolwespruit Street, was in his car in his driveway when he saw the flames.

“Thats when I saw Alan on the ground in the street.

“I called for help on the Secunda 911 Assist 24/7 channel on Zello and these guys were really quick.

“StratconRisk’s people began helping? then Jelani and the municipal fire brigade arrived.”

Mr Bezuidenhout was assisting wherevever he could.

“We must help each other. That is what neighbours are for.”

Numerous community members also jumped in to help with the fire.

Mr Chris Vermaak, the owner of the house, and Alan’s father, is not in town.

He and his daughter (9) are in Marloth Park.
