SECUNDA – Months after the Govan Mbeki Municipality began work to stop a creche from flooding, their temporary solution is still only temporary.
Ms Samantha van Deventer, principal of the Happy Todds Day Care Centre, complained earlier this year about stormwater flooding the school every time that it rains.
Municipal workers addressed the problem by digging a trench next to the school towards the little stream in the green strip behind the school.
This trench does however not reach the stream for the storm water to drain in. It has not been barricaded off and no warning signs were erected to warn pedestrians that this is a deep, open canal filled with stagnant rising water.
“It has been like this for months,” said Mr Cyril Belker, a concerned neighbour.
“The stagnant water is becoming a hazard. Luckily we are now in the winter, but once summer is here, this will be a very deep cystpool.”
Ms Van Deventer said she has now provided bricks and cement for the repairs. The workers were supposed to begin work on Friday, but they have not yet arrived.
“I assume it is due to the burst water pipe crisis in town,” she said.
The DA’s Ms Mariaan Chamberlain has also been taking this matter up with the municipality and was told there was a shortage of pipes.
“They did however promise to make alternative plans to resolve the issue,” Ms Chamberlain said.
