Land invaders might not get the services they demanded

Land invaders wrote a letter to the mayor demanding services from Govan Mbeki Municipality

eMBALENHLE – Govan Mbeki Municipality urged locals to stop invading land.

This came after residents of Azania invaded land in Ext 22 and wrote a letter to Ms Thandi Ngxonono, executive mayor, in which they demand service delivery.

They described themselves as landless people who are appealing to Govan Mbeki Municipality to provide them with essential services such as water, sanitation, roads and electricity.

Attached to the letter were the signatures of about 800 residents of Marikana.

Mr Bheki Kubheka, municipal spokesman, said it is imperative that the public refrains from occupying any piece of land illegally because it makes it difficult for the municipality to provide basic services to such dwellings.

“That is primarily because of their illegal nature and their establishment outside of the municipal spatial development framework that informs our prior planning for human settlement in line with the housing act on the prerequisite of human habitable land.

“As much as we cannot for now yield to the said demands, the occupants remain the responsibility of the municipality for proper allocation of land when it is available following proper screening processes as encapsulated in the housing act.”
