The mother of a toddler who died in shack fire is fighting for her life in hospital

KINROSS – Angry residents of Marikana Section allegedly assaulted and threw the mother of a three-month-old baby in a fire after her child was killed in a fire on Sunday, 9 September.

They accused the mother of negligence and alleged that she lied about the whereabouts of her baby.

A neighbour was speaking on the phone when she a heard strange sound and went outside to investigate.

She saw big flames coming from a neighbour’s shack and the mother of the baby who was screaming for help.

She asked the mother where her baby was. She said the baby was on the other side of the shack which was not burning.

“I screamed for help. Neighbours came and we tried get to the other side of the shack, but we could not find the baby.

“We asked the mother again where the baby was. She then said the baby was in the basin.

“Residents became angry because they thought she was lying.”

It is alleged that the residents extinguished the fire and began searching for the baby. She was found dead.

The angry residents allegedly assaulted the mother and threw her into a fire.

She sustained injuries and was taken to Evander Hospital where she is fighting for her life.

The baby was buried in the Marikana Section Cemetery on Thursday, 13 September.

Mr Mlondi Malishe, the uncle of the baby, said the family was saddened by this tragedy and loss of the baby.

“It was sad that we had to bury my niece, while her mother was fighting for her life in the hospital.

“However there is nothing that we can do, what’s done, is done.

“We wish our sister a speedy recovery and hope that her daughter rests in peace.”
