EVANDER – Four suspects were apprehended this morning, 26 September in connection with the theft of scrap metal from Shaft 5 of Evander Gold Mines.
Jelani Security spotted a Toyota Dyna truck and a Hilux bakkie outside the mine’s premises late last night and kept an eye on them until they entered the premises.
One of their clients, Scrapcore, is currently working on a scrap metal project on the mine.
Early this morning, Mr Alf Byleveldt from Jelani was alerted that the suspicious vehicles were leaving the mine premises with what looked like scrap metal.
Jelani Security and a farm protection group followed the vehicles past Brendan Village up to where it forms a T-junction with the road between Standerton and Leandra.
Mr Byleveldt chased after the truck as it headed towards Leandra.
As soon as he pulled over the truck and apprehended the driver, three others jumped out and ran away.
“At that moment the Leandra police also arrived and in a joint venture by the Leandra and Evander cops, the police’s K9 unit, SSG mine security, StratconRisk and Jelani we were able to catch all of them,” Mr Byleveldt said.
Both vehicles were confiscated and thick steel bars valued at about R10 000 were found in the truck.
