Dr Eloff still takes new patients and delivers babies
He enjoys his jog as gynaecologist and obstetrician.
TRICHARDT – Dr Wilco Eloff has been working as a gynaecologist and obstetrician for 35 years and has been working at MediClinic Highveld for the past 23 years.
He still remembers the first time that he delivered a baby in 1983 while he was still at university.
He stopped doing obstetrics at the end of last year because he was settling for a life at a slower pace, although he still worked as a gynaecologist at his practice.
However he could not stay away from the hospital and theatre room for too long and is now back at catching babies.
He has delivered between 5 000 and 6 000 babies as a gynaecologist.
“There was a demand for a gynaecologist at the hospital and I decided to return,” said Dr Eloff.
He was born in Bloemfontein and grew up in Pretoria.
He studied to become a doctor after school and also did his two years of army service.
Dr Eloff specialised to become a gynaecologist and an obstetrician at the hospital in Bloemfontein and his professor at the time said that there was a need for such a doctor in Secunda.
“My wife and I decided to have a look at Trichardt and Secunda and we are still here,” said Dr Eloff.
“We drove past the hospital and did not see it at first, because the town was so small.”
The couple has three daughters and two grandchildren.
Dr Eloff is a qualified scuba diver, but nowadays enjoys hunting more.
“I believe that which you hunt you must also eat, so I only hunt what I will eat.”
Dr Eloff has also tried his hand at fly fishing and obtained his pilot’s licence.
He believes in eating healthy and that many of today’s illnesses come from the food that people eat.
Dr Eloff advised people to rather eat fruit and vegetables that are in season.
