Magolide of Ligwa FM flying Ermelo’s flag high after countrywide radio nomination

The Live Your Dream SA community radio awards are a national competition so it is safe to say, its cream of the crop in community radio.

Mr Khulekani ‘Magolide’ Mlotshwa will be flying the Msukaligwa flag high at the ‘Live Your Dream SA’ community radio awards.

The radio jock has been nominated in the best radio presenter category after a mere seven months on air at Ermelo’s radio station, Ligwa FM.

Born and bred on a farm outside Piet Retief, Magolide, knew from a young age he wanted to be a broadcaster after spending most days listening to the radio with his grandparents who raised him.

After he completed grade 12, Magolide, enrolled in a radio presenting programme in Durban to perfect a talent he was convinced he had.

“The who’s who of the broadcasting world taught us all the tools of the trade and that is where we learned that radio is all about the love and not the money,”

Armed with all the knowledge and advice, Magolide began his journey as a broadcaster, applying at community radio stations all over KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga.

He was eventually taken in by Ligwa FM, doing the 12 to 3am slot, manning a afro-pop and rhythm and blues show.

Magolide took to radio like a duck to water and was moved to the nine to 12pm slot with audiences very impressed with his radio jockey skills.

When asked about his alias name, he laughingly says he came up with it after a listener said he’s got a golden voice.
Magolide means gold in Zulu.

This young man is confident and believes he is going places in the broadcasting world, which is evident after being nominated in such a short space of time he had been on the air.

Him being nominated is another interesting anecdote.

“A listener visited while I was working and told me about the awards. He said I really stand a chance of winning and showed me all the details on how to enter.”

Magolide entered the competition with no hopes and was actually pleasantly surprised after he was chosen as a nominee.

The awards take place on 22 November and it will be a chance for the newcomer to mingle with industry greats.

Listeners can vote for Magolide by SMSing LYD1438 to 45633.

“I hope I come back with the award, it would be great to win for my station as well as for Ermelo and Msukaligwa as a whole,” Magolide concluded.
