eMBALENHLE – Recent police reports indicate a high increase of rape incidents in the area.
Police said what worries, is the fact that minors seem to be the target of rapists.
In a recent incident a 3-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 35-year-old in Extension 25 (Crossroad).
According to the police her mother was occupied with chores when she heard her daughters’ friends crying and screaming.
She investigated and the four girls informed her that her daughter was crying in the suspects room.
The mother asked for assistance from residents and managed to open the room, forcefully.
Const Busi Mthethwa, police spokesman, said the girl was rescued and the suspect was caught under the bed.
She said angry residents severely assaulted the suspect before being detained by police.
He was taken to the Evander Hospital.
“The suspect is known by the family and in the community.
“Often times the children are abused and assaulted by persons known to their families or relatives.
“We encouraged parents not to trust their daughters with anyone and to always know whereabouts of their children.”
She concluded that the police is working around the clock to apprehend other rape suspects.
