Secunda K9 Unit expands with more dogs trained at finding narcotics

EVANDER – The Secunda Canine Unit (K9) has acquired the services of two more narcotics dogs for this area bringing the total of dogs that can sniff out drugs to four.

Sgt Sophie Khoza is the handler and trainer of Torry, a golden retriever.
The K9 unit is a specialised unit and the members operate not only locally and in the Secunda cluster that includes places as far as Grootvlei, but also across the eastern
Highveld and are also sometimes required to travel throughout the province.
The Secunda Canine Unit has several dogs trained in specific fields. There are two tracker dogs, a pathology dog that can sniff out blood and semen, a fire investigation dog that can sniff out the tiniest drop of accelerant and four patrol dogs.
Const Mazibuko and Falcon last week travelled to Cape Town where they joined the national anti-drug programme on the Cape Flats.
According to the unit commander, Col Nancy Ntuli, this is also a chance for this team to hone their skills.
Col Ntuli said the unit have had great successes and the new additions will add to the success.
And if you think marijuana is legal, think again – it might be legal for a person to use at home and in medicinal use, but it is still classified as a narcotic and an illegal substance.
“The selling and smuggling of dagga is still very much illegal,” said Col Ntuli.
