The Standerton Advertiser reported in its 9 November edition about six Standerton Police officers who were back on duty, after they were arrested in connection with a robbery.
This however, is not the case and the officers have been fired, according to Brig Augustine Mngomezulu.
According to him, in a non-related case, five Standerton Police officers were suspended for two months after internal transgression and they, after facing disciplinary steps, are back on duty and not the aforementioned six.
Brig Mngomezulu said the departmental inquiry was finalized on 17 July.
The six officers in question are Constables Thabiso P Lepoto (35), Jabu G Sekhoto (37), Siphiwe E Ntshangase (45), Fika T Makhubu (33), Solomon Richard (36) and Hlalanathi Ngcemu (37).
The Standerton Magistrate’s Court set bail at R1 000, but according to Brig Mngomezulu, these officers will not return to their positions as there is an ongoing criminal investigation.
The officers were arrested on 10 April and made their first appearance in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on 11 and 12 April.
The investigation against them was led by the Hawks in conjunction with the Standerton Police.
They stand accused of impersonating South African Revenue Services’ officials and subsequently of robbing a shop on 7 January last year.
It is alleged that they robbed the store of an undisclosed amount of money.
