Dr Emmanuel Taban will soon open comprehensive practice at Mediclinic Highveld

Doctor’s wife will join him in his new practice

TRICHARDT – Dr Emmanuel Malish Taban qualified as a pulmonologist at the end of October and will soon be able to offer these services at the Mediclinic Highveld.

He has already graduated and is currently waiting for his HPCSA registration.

He opened a private practice at Mediclinic Highveld in 2011 and soon realised that there are many untreated pulmonary-related diseases in the area.

It has been his dream for many years to specialise in Pulmonology. His dream became a reality by obtaining a higher degree and he can now live out his passion.

He will be one of only a few pulmonologists in the country.

“There are only a few pulmonologists in private practices in Pretoria,” said Dr Taban.

Dr Taban will soon implement a comprehensive practice including Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, Physiotherapy and Neurophysiology at Mediclinic Highveld.

Dr Emmanuel Malish Taban and his colleagues are Ms Thoko Nhlanhla, Ms Audrey Fischer, Ms Nthabiseng Tshabalala, Dr Kelebogile Khomo, Ms Carien Carinus and Ms Shibe Shivy.

He is married to Ms Motheo Phalatse Taban, who is currently doing her Masters Degree in Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy which will also compliment his practice.

“As a pulmonologist, I can treat patients with lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” said Dr Taban.

“Patients had to drive to Gauteng and then wait three months or longer for an appointment, now they can visit a doctor here in Trichardt.”

This passionate doctor grew up in the south of Sudan but because of the war, he fled his country in 1995 when he was only 16-years-old.

He lost his father in the war and received support from Catholic missionaries in 1995 who helped him when he arrived in South Africa as a refugee.

He became a South African citizen.

He attended school in Badplaas, but his results were not good enough to obtain an exemption to study for a doctors degree therefore he continued his schooling career at Jeppe High School for Boys in Johannesburg.

Dr Taban passed with distinctions and received a scholarship to study to become a doctor.

He completed his one-year internship at Kalafong Hospital in Pretoria and his community year at Bethal Hospital.

Dr Taban worked as a medical officer doing anaesthetics for eight months and this was when he realised that he wants to study further in the pulmonology field.

“The people of Secunda and the surrounding areas have been good to me, so now I want to give it a go with the comprehensive practice.”

The management team of Mediclinic Highveld congratulated Dr Taban on his hard work and studies while still being involved in the private practice at Mediclinic Highveld.

Mr Willem Schoonbee, General Manager of Mediclinic Highveld and Secunda, thanked the community for supporting Dr Taban.

Dr Taban enjoys fishing and jogging in his free time and he is currently learning how to weld.

The Tabans have three daughters, aged two, five and eight and they adopted his niece who is 11 years old.
