eMZINONIÂ – Police have called on tavern owners to comply with the law and trade responsibly.
They said those who do not comply, will face serious consequences which might result in their licences being revoked.
Tavern owners held a meeting with police on Thursday, 29 November at eMzinoni Police Station.
The meeting was aimed at compiling strategies on how both parties can work together to reduce crime in the area.
Const Cynthia Mtsweni, police spokesperson, said it was emphasised that tavern owners must adhere to operating hours.
She said that most of the time, crimes such as rapes and assaults, emanate from taverns.
“We called on them to enhance their own security and to ensure that their customers are safe.
“We are happy that the meeting was a success and we believe that during this festive season, crime will be reduced in the area.”
She called on women who often go to taverns to avoid travelling alone during the night.
Const Mtsweni said police will conduct patrols during the festive season to ensure the safety of communities.
