
SECUNDA – Police urge locals to avoid hitchhiking and ask the community to rather use public transport.
A woman was hitchhiking from Kinross to Evander when she reportedly got a lift from a vehicle filled with three occupants.
It is alleged that the driver slowed down the car after one of the occupants said he needed to use the bathroom.
According to the police when the man returned, he began touching the woman and attempted to rape her.
He demanded her belongings and stole R500 and a cell phone.
The woman tried to escape by opening the door while the car was still moving.
A police officer who was off-duty noticed the incident.
A police chase ensued to a veld where the car was parked and the suspects fled on foot.
One suspect was apprehended.
He was arrested and will appear in court soon.
