Leandra residents block off R50 in protest

They alleged that some residents have been robbed, kidnapped and raped because of hitchhiking.

LEANDRA – Disgruntled residents are blocking roads in a protest supporting Zamokuhle Taxi Association to be allowed to operate in the Evander and Secunda areas.

This came after the taxi association was allegedly prohibited to operate on these routes by their rival association, Vukanini Taxi Association.

The protesters have blocked the R50 Road with rocks and burning tyres.

Taxis also barricaded the road near the taxi rank.

The unrest began last week after residents held several meetings and took a resolution to support the local association, Zamokuhle Taxi Association.

Speaking to the Ridge Times, some protesters said since local taxis were stopped to operate in the Secunda area, they are forced to hitchhike which put their lives in danger.

They alleged that some residents have been robbed, kidnapped and raped because of hitchhiking.

Law enforcers urged motorists to avoid the R50 and to be vigilant when driving around Leandra.
